Passionate Discipleship Bible Study Talk 9: Fighting the Good Fight
Importance of Passing on the Faith
In this final session of Passionate Discipleship, we are reminded of the importance of passing on the faith from one generation to the next. We can learn from the influence of Timothy’s grandmother and mother, who played a crucial role in shaping Timothy’s sincere faith. Despite not having access to a Bible like ours or the same opportunities for education, Lois and Eunice lived out their faith in a way that inspired Timothy. They didn’t shrink back or assume that passing on the faith was someone else’s job. Their lives reflected the truth found in 2 Timothy 1:7, where Paul writes about the Holy Spirit giving us a spirit of power, love, and self-control.
Being Strong in Grace and Teaching Others
As Christians, we are called to be strong in grace and to teach and disciple others. Just as Paul urged Timothy to guard the truth and pass it on, we are entrusted with the task of following the pattern of sound words and passing on the faith to others. It is not enough to only benefit ourselves; we are called to share the good news of Jesus with others. We may not be lofty experts, but we are relatable, everyday people who can offer hope and show others that faith in God works. In a world marked by stress and moral decline, we must not retreat or give up. We must stand firm in our faith and Scripture, knowing that our mission is to imitate Jesus’ life faithfully and teach others to live lives of faith.
Standing Firm in Faith
The world we live in is filled with stress and moral decay, but we are called to stand firm in our faith. Instead of retreating or conforming to society’s standards, we must hold fast to the truths found in Scripture. It takes courage to navigate through a world that often rejects God, but we are reminded that taking a leap of faith is an essential aspect of following Christ. Our success is not measured by worldly standards, but rather by the love we show and the impact we have on the lives of others. Personal stories and letters from students serve as powerful examples of the transformative impact of discipleship.
Continuing to Show Up and Offer Love
An essential aspect of discipleship is showing up and offering unconditional love. We are called to imitate Jesus’ love and compassion for others. An analogy that captures the essence of discipleship is the story of lowering the paralyzed man through the roof to reach Jesus. Just like the friends who took action and went to great lengths to bring their friend to Jesus, we too are called to go above and beyond to help others encounter Christ. We are encouraged to pray and declare transformation over the lives of our loved ones, trusting that God can open their hearts and bring about profound change.
Not Giving Up on Discipling the Next Generation
The final message of this series emphasizes the importance of not giving up on discipling the next generation. Our investments in the lives of young people can have a lasting impact. Just as Paul passed the torch to Timothy, we are called to invest in the faith of those who will carry it forward. The long-term significance of discipleship should not be underestimated. Our efforts today can shape the faith of future generations and contribute to the growth of the kingdom of God.
As we conclude this Passionate Discipleship series, let us remember the wisdom and teachings found in 2 Timothy. May we be inspired by the examples of Timothy’s grandmother and mother, who passed on their sincere faith. May we be strong in grace and committed to teaching and discipleship. Let us stand firm in our faith, even in the midst of a world in turmoil. May we continue to show up and offer love to those around us. And finally, let us never give up on discipling the next generation, knowing that our efforts today can have a lasting impact on the future of the faith.
Passionate Discipleship Bible study is based on 2 Timothy. Paul challenges Timothy to keep following Jesus not matter what it costs him and no matter how high the sacrifice might be. Paul encourages Timothy to not only stay faithful but also to pass on the faith to people who can continue to share the good news about Jesus.
In this final session of Passionate Discipleship, Lisa Brenninkmeyer talks about how St. Paul instructed Timothy to imitate Jesus’ life faithfully and to teach others how to live lives of faith and how we can replicate these actions today.
